Social and Emotional Competence Games
Board Game and Card Game
by Gary Yorke, PhD
Used together or separately, these two games are a great way to teach social and emotional skills to children.
The board game asks players to follow a winding path, drawing game cards along the way. These cards cover five topics: sharing feelings, getting along, caring, communication, and cooperating. As children answer questions posed on the cards, they gradually learn how to recognize and manage emotions, empathize with others, solve problems, communicate effectively, make responsible decisions, and build healthy relationships. For 2 to 6 players.
The card game focuses on five specific disorders that affect social and emotional functioning: anxiety, depression, ADHD, Asperger’s, and bipolar disorder. There’s a card deck for each disorder—you choose the deck that addresses the needs of your group. Players respond to questions on the cards, earning chips for each thoughtful answer. This game generates lively discussion as it teaches children how to manage the feelings and impulses associated with each disorder. Includes five card decks (with 54 cards each), directions, and a bag of chips. For 2 to 6 players.
