The Storytelling Card Game
by Richard A. Gardner, M.D.

This game elicits stories from children who are reluctant or resistant in therapy. It provides insight into the child's conscious and subconscious problems.

The game consists of 24 picture cards plus cut-out figures, including 6 Black, 6 Hispanic, and 3 Asian figures. Twenty of the cards depict common settings (e.g., living room, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom), and four are blank. Each player selects a picture and several cut-out figures and uses these to create a story. Depending on the quality of the story's content, the player earns two or more chips. The therapist responds with stories and suggestions that address the child's concerns. The game can be played by the therapist and one to four children. Game leaders should have a master's degree in psychology, social work, or counseling.
