Talking Back to OCD
by John S. March, M.D., with Christine M. Benton
Nobody wants to get rid of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) more than the kids who have it. And now they can, using the eight-step program presented in this groundbreaking book.
Following cognitive-behavioral procedures used at the Duke University OCD clinic, this book puts kids in charge of their illness. Step-by-step, it shows them how to: (1) rethink OCD, viewing it as a "brain hiccup," not a part of themselves; (2) gradually resist, or "talk back to" OCD; and (3) recognize the warning signs and defend themselves when an episode threatens.
At each step of the program, the child is given a specific game plan. Then, in separate instructions, parents are told what's going on, what to expect, and how to be supportive without getting in the way. By giving the child responsibility yet including the parents in a supporting role, this program eliminates much of the family tension and worry that often accompany OCD.
"As a mother of a son with OCD, I highly recommend this book...
Dr. March provides detailed steps that can empower a young person to battle OCD."
