Developed with the Autism Research Centre at Cambridge University, this DVD helps children with autism recognize the emotions in people’s faces.
Because youngsters with autism often enjoy mechanical things, The Transporters features animated vehicles, each with a real human face, expressing a distinct emotion. Fifteen 5-minute episodes explore various feelings in a story context. Nigel the bus, for example, likes to go fast and gets angry when traffic slows. Jenny the tram wears a sunny smile until she has to transport a load of smelly fish. Children love to watch these characters, and studies show that after doing so, they’re better at matching faces and feelings. They even apply their new skill to unfamiliar faces, correctly identifying expressions in pictures of strangers.
The Transporters Professional Pack includes:
• DVD with 15 five-minute episodes and 30 interactive quizzes to reinforce and test understanding
• CD containing 24 printable activity worksheets, 15 sentence-completion exercises, 10 group activities, 8 one-on-one language activities, tips for creating an autism-friendly clinic or classroom, and a copy of Autism and Asperger Syndrome: What You Need to Know by Professor Simon Baron-Cohen. It also lets you print out instructions, character images, and reward certificates.
• Instruction Book (32-pages)
• Activity Book (24-pages)
Though the DVD works on most PCs, it is meant to be played on television.
