Stop That Angry Thought
by Max Nass, LMHC

Here's a deck of cards that teaches children how to manage their anger. Using two internal dialog techniques—Thought Stopping and Self-Talk—kids can stop anger in its tracks. By simply playing cards, they learn to envision a stop sign whenever their anger is triggered and to replace their angry thoughts with more positive responses.

The deck includes 37 pairs of cards, and each pair includes a "situation" card and a corresponding "response" card. As youngsters react to hypothetical situations that might normally trigger anger, they see a big red stop sign on each response card—a cue to stop the angry thought and come up with a better alternative.

You can use Stop That Angry Thought to play either of two familiar card games, Concentration or Go Fish. For 2 to 4 players.

Kids Loved It!! | Apr 8th, 2011

I used the "Stop That Angry Thought" card game to end my 5 week Impulse control group - 1st through 5th grade. The kids loved playing "go fish" and reading the story matches. It was great with our theme to Stop, Think, then act as each story ends with the character seeing a stop sign in their head and then making an appropriate choice. They used an actual stop sign clip art, which served as a wonderful visual.

I have used this game several times with children in the private practice where I work. The clients that I have played this with are very engaged and enthusiastic about the game. They are familiar with the two options to play the game including Go Fish. The cards are very colorful and provide easy to read and every day situations that children will encounter at school, at home, or in the community. The stop signs on the cards provide a visual reminder and opportunity for children to practice this process in session. The game can be shortened by taking cards out of the deck, which helps keep children engaged and the session moving along. I would highly recommend this game to be used with children who have anger issues and self-control problems.
